Puzzled by many religious beliefs, I was driven to understand religion, especially my own, Christianity. This question has inspired me since my teens, researching, teaching and participating in faith communities, university classrooms, and the solitude of my faith.
Here’s where I’m at right now. . .
Religious beliefs are like maps; they are symbolic guides to help us venture into the unknown – that is, our everyday life.
But, just like any map, you need to be shown how to use it. After all, what map looks like the terrain it symbolizes? You need a more experienced traveler to show you how to read its symbols.
Inspired by the true story of a young family lost in a wintry mountain wilderness, I reflect on how religious symbols can guide us on our wilderness trails.
The Trails are. . .
1. The Trail of Life Rhythms
2. The Trail of Reverence Before The More
3. The Trail of Revelation
4. The Trail of Resilience
5. The Trail of Relationship
6. The Trail of Self-Regulation
7. The Trail of Repentance
8. The Trail of Resurrection
These can be thought of as Eight Trails, eight paths for living with joy, purpose, and strength. This book, serialized for easy reading through Substack, explores the power of religious symbols to guide us through Life’s Wilderness.
Eight Trails was written for my own young adult kids. But, if you have questions about religion, it’s for you as well. Beginning Sunday, December 10, each week I'll post a new installment from Eight Trails, delivered to your inbox, via Substack. See more at joanneswenson.com Link to Joanne Swenson's website
